Local Sights/Activities/Eateries/Businesses
• Opened in May 2011, Eureka Market & Café is our sister company, located in our building in Grahamsville. There you can find a tempting array of baked goods made fresh on the premises (think strawberry rhubarb pie, blueberry muffins, cookies, brownies, quiches). They sell fresh produce from local farms, and also use it in their tasty salads. You can grab sandwiches to go, or linger over a cappuccino in our garden terrace. Groceries range from staples (regular or organic milk, fresh bread, etc), to all-natural, organic, and gluten-free items.
• Red Hill Fire Tower - great hike in Claryville of about 1.5 miles up along the trail to the clearing where the fire tower stands. Fabulous views! On Dinch Rd.
• Claryville Pottery - elegant, hand-crafted pottery made right here in Claryville. This is where you go for a tasteful memento of your visit. Located on the Claryville Rd. next to the turn-off for the Frost Valley Rd. 985-2016 for hours.
• The Blue Hill Café in Claryville sells grocery items, sandwiches, pizza and now beer & wine (immediately surrounding towns are dry)! There is seating, and WiFi access. A liquor store has just opened as an adjunct, so no more running to Liberty to restock.
• There are several antiques stores in the area: Hamilton’s (Neversink), Half Moon Antiques (Grahamsville), and all in Liberty: Artisans Gallery Antiques, Town & Country, and Ferndale Antiques (just outside Liberty).
• It’s always fun to share news of a new endeavor that reflects the hard work and creativity of its daring entrepreneurs, and Rolling River Café Gallery and Inn, in Parksville (25 Cooley Rd) is a winner. Their bijou restaurant features fresh fare prepared and served by Rob and Kim Rayevsky and their daughter Miriam, in a fun, friendly atmosphere that has everyone I’ve sent, returning almost immediately. Their outdoor seating, with strings of lights through the trees and charming café tables (including a private, romantic spot along the river), has a European feel, and is so alluring you’ll want to bring your fleeces and extend the season as long as possible. Call for schedule 845-747-4123.
• Peekamoose Restaurant & Tap Room: Dinner at Peekamoose is always a treat. Located in Big Indian, it’s a remarkably beautiful 35 min drive down the Frost Valley Rd to rte 28. Go left and it’s about 1 mile on the left. Owners Devin and Marybeth Mills have renovated an old farmhouse into an inspired space of wood, glass and intriguing and playful artwork. The food is simply outstanding (not surprising given their experience at Picholine and Le Bernadin), and they make an effort to use local growers and the freshest ingredients available. (845) 254-6500.
• The Catskill Harvest Market focuses on bringing local produce, cheeses, meat, poultry, baked goods, and even soap to market, all with a wonderful retail flair. You’ll also find an exciting range of gourmet coffees and teas, candy and gift items. Now there’s a cute eatery, where you can nosh on divine sandwiches, etc. On rte 52 between Liberty & White Sulphur Springs.
• The New Age Health Spa is just minutes down the road in Neversink, and offers half day and full day programs for non-guests, which include massage, facials, yoga, reflexology, seaweed wraps, pilates and more. (800) 682-4348.
Fly Fishing
The Neversink River runs through Claryville, although it is almost exclusively privately owned. Some of the best public access trout fishing can be found nearby on the famous Willowemoc (willow-wee’-mock) and Beaverkill Rivers. I know a wonderful professional fishing guide who would be happy to share his knowledge (and of course some wonderful stories!).
The Catskill Fly Fishing Museum in Livingston Manor pays homage to the rich history of fishing in this area (the nearby Neversink River is the birthplace of American fly fishing). In Roscoe, Catskill Flies is the go-to shop for equipment and very knowledgeable staff. I like the daily stream conditions report on their site.
Hiking
Here’s a great link describing various trails nearby:
Book sale, Internet, children’s story-telling
The Daniel Pierce Library in Grahamsville, NY (about 8 mins from Claryville, 15 mins from Liberty), is a wonderful asset to the area, providing internet access, the daily New York Times (to read there), a wide selection of periodicals, and soon, a museum about the area. They have a wonderful used book tent out front during the summer, and an honor box to pay for your selections when the library is closed. Refreshing! There is also a children’s story-telling program.
